Rathbun Scores Twice to Lift Women's Soccer Over Spires

CRETE, Neb. – Two early goals from McKenna Rathbun proved to be the difference as Doane women's soccer secured a 2-1 win over Saint Mary on Saturday afternoon at Papik Field.

Rathbun set the tone quickly, striking in the 7th minute to give the Tigers an early advantage. Less than 10 minutes later, she doubled the lead with her second goal of the day, putting Doane firmly in control at 2-0. Rathbun finished with five shots, three on target, and now has two goals on the season.

Saint Mary answered late in the first half when Rebecca Lord scored in the 45th minute, assisted by Jessica Gil-Garcia, trimming the deficit to 2-1. Despite a flurry of pressure in the second half, the Spires couldn't find the equalizer.

Doane goalkeeper Ella Hale anchored the defense, making two saves in the full 90 minutes while withstanding 12 Saint Mary shot attempts. On the other end, the Tigers tallied 14 shots, placing seven on goal.

Alongside Rathbun's offensive surge, Brianna-Lynn Ehia and Hayle Brodine each contributed scoring chances, while midfielder Anali Astorga and defender Myridean Lehman provided steady play through the middle and back third.

For Saint Mary, Lord led the attack with four shots, including two on frame, while goalkeeper Angelica Quintana-Af and relief keeper Avah Casarez combined for five saves. The Spires had opportunities from set pieces, recording eight corner kicks, but couldn't capitalize.

The victory moves Doane to 2-2-1 overall, while Saint Mary drops to 1-2-1.

Doane will take to the road for their next three contests, starting on Wednesday, September 10, at Bellevue. Kickoff is set for 5:30 PM.

Final Score: Doane 2, Saint Mary 1
