FOREST CITY, Iowa — Doane University women's basketball led wire-to-wire and turned a fast start into a 74-64 GPAC road win over Waldorf on Saturday afternoon.
Doane (12-13, 9-11 GPAC) opened the game with a 27-15 first quarter behind a barrage from deep, hitting five 3-pointers in the opening 10 minutes. The Tigers carried a 41-26 advantage into halftime and pushed the lead to as many as 19 in the third quarter before Waldorf (2-24, 1-19 GPAC) trimmed the margin late.
Mattea Kassebaum powered the Tigers with 24 points, eight rebounds, five assists and five steals, while Rylie Rice added 22 points with five 3-pointers and nine rebounds. Megan Chambers finished with 12 points and matched Rice with a team-high nine rebounds, and Doane's defense made its presence felt throughout with 13 steals and nine blocks.
Doane shot 36.4% from three (8-of-22) and scored 30 points in the paint, using pressure defense to convert turnovers into points. Waldorf hit 13 threes to stay within range, but the Tigers answered key pushes at the line, going 16-of-26 at the stripe.
Waldorf was led by Destiny Sao-Martinez with 17 points, and Mia Sao-Martinez chipped in 16 points on four made 3-pointers.
