Women's Basketball Tripped Up by No. 9 DWU

CRETE, Neb. — Doane Women's Basketball ran into a fast start from ninth-ranked Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon, falling 69-47 in GPAC action in Crete.

The Tigers were held to four points in the opening quarter as DWU jumped out to a 21-4 lead after one and took a 43-23 advantage into halftime. Doane responded with its best offensive stretch in the third, trimming into the deficit behind improved ball movement and perimeter shooting, but the Tigers couldn't overcome the early hole.

Megan Chambers led Doane with 18 points, going 6-for-14 from the floor and 6-for-8 at the free-throw line. Mattea Kassebaum added nine points and a team-best six rebounds, while Keeleigh Knobbe chipped in 14 points with a pair of three-pointers.

Doane finished 15-of-50 shooting (30.0%) and went 13-of-22 at the stripe. The Tigers hit four three-pointers and totaled seven assists, but were forced into 15 turnovers against the DWU pressure.

Dakota Wesleyan was paced by Avery Broughton with 17 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Rylee Rosenquist posted 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Shalayne Nagel filled the stat sheet with 12 points, nine rebounds, four steals and three assists. DWU won the rebounding battle 53-34, including 21 offensive boards, and scored 36 points in the paint.

Doane (10-12, 8-10 GPAC) will continue play with a non-conference game at home against Nebraska Wesleyan on Tuesday, February 10.
