Softball Season Comes to a Close

GAME ONE

CRETE, Neb. — Doane softball struck first, but Midland rallied with five unanswered runs to take game one of Saturday's GPAC doubleheader, 5-2, at the Doane Ballfield Complex.

The Tigers opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Jeryn Allen singled up the middle and Milannie Gonzalez followed with a bunt single. Both runners moved into scoring position before a Midland throwing error allowed Allen and Gonzalez to score, giving Doane a 2-0 lead.

Midland answered in the fourth inning, tying the game on a two-run double from Jaidan Wehrle. The Warriors then added three runs in the fifth, highlighted by an RBI double from Isabelle Pagan, a run-scoring sequence on an outfield error, and an RBI groundout by Grace Behrns.

Doane finished with five hits in the game. Gonzalez led the Tigers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Allen, Katelyn Hays, and Jaiden Papik each added one hit. Allen also scored a run.

GAME TWO

CRETE, Neb. — Doane softball closed out the 2026 season on Saturday afternoon as Midland used a five-run sixth inning to pull away for a 6-2 win in game two at the Doane Ballfield Complex. The victory gave Midland at least a share of the GPAC regular-season title.

Doane struck first in the opening inning. Jeryn Allen was hit by a pitch to start the frame, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Milannie Gonzalez and advanced to third on a passed ball. Evelyn Iniguez followed with an RBI groundout to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

The Tigers added another run in the third after Hannah Pack singled to left-center and stole second. Gonzalez delivered the run-scoring hit, singling to right-center to bring Pack home for a 2-0 advantage.

Midland cut the deficit in half in the fourth on a solo home run by Alexis Shepherd, then took control in the sixth. Isabelle Pagan tied the game with an RBI ground-rule double before Emma Hodnet delivered the big swing of the inning, a three-run home run to left field. The Warriors added one more run in the frame on an error to build a 6-2 lead.

Doane finished with four hits in the game. Gonzalez went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a sacrifice bunt, while Iniguez added a hit and an RBI. Pack finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base, and Katelyn Hays doubled.

Faith McDonald started in the circle for Doane and worked 5.2 innings, allowing five runs on five hits while striking out two. Bri True pitched the final 1.1 innings in relief.

Midland pitcher Mackenzie Groninga earned the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out nine in a complete game.

Doane finished the season 20-25 overall and 7-15 in GPAC play.
