Northwestern Rallies Past Softball in Game One
ORANGE CITY, Iowa — The Doane Tigers softball dropped game one of a GPAC doubleheader to Northwestern Red Raiders softball, 7-4, on Tuesday afternoon.
Doane (19-21, 6-11 GPAC) struck first with a run in the opening inning and added single runs in the third, fifth, and seventh frames, but Northwestern (27-15, 12-7 GPAC) used a late offensive surge to pull away for the win.
The Tigers tallied seven hits in the contest, led by Katelyn Hays, who finished 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Milannie Gonzalez added a triple and scored a run, while Evelyn Iniguez and Ciara Hudson each drove in a run.
Doane built a 3-1 advantage after the top of the fifth inning before Northwestern took control in the bottom of the inning. The Red Raiders scored three runs in the fifth frame and added three more runs in the sixth to secure the comeback victory.
Trinity Robinson went the distance in the circle for the Tigers, tossing six innings while allowing seven runs (four earned) on seven hits and striking out six.
Despite the early lead, Doane was hampered by four defensive errors, which proved costly as Northwestern capitalized during its late rally.
The Tigers will look to bounce back in game two of the doubleheader later in the afternoon.
