Women's Wrestling Earns 42 Individual Wins in Home Tournament

Women's Wrestling hosted the Conner/Oppenheim Doane Open on Saturday in Crete with 20 wrestlers competing. The Tigers finished with 42 wins and a pair of second place finishes.

In the 103 bracket, Karina Vang took second place with a 4-1 day. She opened with a pin over Almarwa Alkhalil (Ottawa, KS) in 2:45. In her second match, Vang won by tech fall, 10-0, over Angelique Cervantes (Menlo). She posted a pin in 1:18 over Monee Cordero (Providence, MT) to advance to the semifinals where she took on NAIA No. 4 Judy Sandoval (Grand View). Vang started the scoring with a four-point takedown and never looked back as she posted a 10-5 decision. In the finals, she lost to NAIA No. 1 Erin Hikiji (Providence, MT).

Kimberly Navarrete picked up one win at 103, a 10-0 tech fall victory. Jaden Breeden went 2-2 at 110. She posted a win by pin and one by tech fall. Emily Cano collected a tech fall win at 117. Julia Breeden went 3-2 at 124. She recorded two wins by pin and one by tech fall.

Doane had four wrestlers compete at 131. Katie Dolence went 4-2, posting three wins by pin and one by decision. Ashlee Palimo'o went 3-2, recording one win by decision and two by tech fall. Brooke Cox collected a 12-2 tech fall win and Brianna Membreno had a win by pin in 22 seconds, 7th-fastest in program history.

In the 138 bracket, Aevri Ciha went 3-2 with all three wins by tech fall. Bridgette Sotomayor went 3-2 with her wins coming one apiece via decision, tech fall, and pin. Andrea Jones picked up one win by decision in the bracket. At 145, Payton Weese went 2-2 with both of her wins coming via pin.

Four wrestlers competed in the 160 bracket. Aspen Barber took second place with a 5-1 record. She opened with a pin over Ryelle Clark (Carl Albert) in 2:43. Barber edged out Hailey Sutton (Providence, MT) in the next round, 3-2. She then posted a pin in 1:32 over Isabella Deeds (Hastings). In the quarterfinal round, Barber topped GiGi Jones (Ottawa) with a 10-0 tech fall win. NAIA No. 9 Jaclyn Daley (Baker) was the next opponent in the semifinals and Barber pinned her in 5:48. In the finals, NAIA No. 12 Darby Weidl (Ottawa) won the match.

Lamia Benn went 2-2 at 160. She recorded a win by tech fall and one by pin. Yazmin Belk went 2-2 with a win by decision and a win by tech fall. Lauren Garcia won her opening match by tech fall. In the 180 bracket, Hailey Romero went 2-2 as she picked up a win by pin and one by tech fall. Lilianna Martinez won a match at 207 by pin.

Next up for the Tigers will be the NWCA National Duals in January. The event will be held in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and pairings will be announced after the NAIA rankings are announced in late December.
