Nelson Paces Doane Pentathlon Competitors
CRETE, Neb. — The Doane women's track and field team opened its indoor multi-event season at the Happy Holidays Combined Events meet in Crete, with three Tigers finishing in the top seven of the women's pentathlon.
Junior Chaney Nelson paced the Tigers with a fifth-place finish, totaling 3,069 points across five events. Nelson's best showing came in the 60-meter hurdles (9.50 seconds) and long jump (5.11 meters / 16-9.25), where she scored 808 and 589 points respectively. Her overall consistency helped her edge into the top five among a field that included NCAA Division I, II, and III competitors.
Close behind, Dayle Haake placed sixth with 2,861 points, highlighted by a strong effort in the shot put at 10.17 meters (33-4.5) and a solid 60-meter hurdles mark of 9.78 seconds. Felicia Deumi Nappi finished seventh, recording 2,724 points and posting a meet-best throw among the Tigers at 10.78 meters (35-4.5) in the shot put.
Lauren Maly hit a personal best throw, recording a mark of 8.42 meters (27-7.5) in the shot put. It was the lone event she competed in on the day.
The event was won by Zoey Brinker of Kansas State, who posted 3,880 points, including a meet-best clearance of 1.81 meters (5-11.25) in the high jump and a top long jump of 5.99 meters (19-8).
The meet, which featured athletes from Kansas State, Central Missouri, and Central College, served as an early-season benchmark for multi-event athletes. Doane will continue its indoor campaign next week with its first full team meet of the season at the Bulldog Early Bird in Seward.
