Men's Basketball Snags Tough Road Win
Doane Men's Basketball traveled to Yankton, S.D., on Wednesday evening to take on Mount Marty. The Tigers survived a big Lancer run in the second half as they picked up a 63-60 win.
Doane limited Mount Marty to three baskets over the first 10 minutes of play as they took a 13-6 lead. The final 10 minutes was determined by two big runs of points. The Lancers went on a 17-5 run over a six minute span to take a five point lead, 23-18. Over the final 3:32, Doane closed the half on a 10-0 run as they led 28-23 at the break.
In the second half, the Tigers pushed their lead to 11 points, 38-27, five minutes in. Mount Marty countered with a 12-0 run to take a one-point lead with 11 minutes to play. Nick Saiz hit a free throw to tie the game at 39-all followed by 3-point baskets by Brady Timm and Ben Renshaw to regain the lead following the 7-0 run.
Doane would not surrender the lead but the Lancers would pull within a point, 60-59, with 20 seconds to play. Timm made a pair of free throws to push the Tiger lead back to three points. Mount Marty would draw a foul with eight seconds left and made the first free throw. The second was missed but the Lancers came up with the offensive rebound only to have the ball stolen away by Will Grixby before a tying shot attempt could be put up. Grixby made one of his free throws to push the lead back to three points for the final score.
Alec Oberhauser picked up his fourth double-double of the season (plus has a triple double) as he posted 23 points and 11 rebounds. Timm recorded 21 points as he hit four 3-point baskets. He went over 20 points for the 13th time this season. Oberhauser had a team-high three assists.
Doane will host Briar Cliff on Saturday, February 18, in Crete at 3:45 PM. The Tigers will look to clinch a berth in next week's GPAC Tournament with a win or a Hastings loss on Saturday.
