First Half Run Lifts Men's Basketball Over the Thunder
Doane Men's Basketball used a big first half as they defeated Manhattan Christian (Kan.) on Saturday afternoon in Crete, 73-58. The win gave the Tigers the season sweep over the Thunder after winning in Manhattan two weeks earlier.
The game opened with the Tigers jumping out to a 7-0 lead. Manhattan Christian came back behind a 9-2 run to tie the game at 9-all. Doane regained the lead with another 7-0 run and they never looked back. The Tigers closed the half on their third 7-0 run of the first 20 minutes as they led 37-20 at the break.
The largest lead of the game for Doane was 28 points, coming at the 10:13 mark of the second half. Over the next five minutes, MCC went on an 18-2 run to close the gap to 16 points, 61-49. Doane was able to push the lead back to 19 points before the Thunder scored the final four points of the game.
Alec Oberhauser led all scorers with 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Brady Timm and Caleb Hrabik added 12 points apiece and Cooper Sheldon finished with 10 points. Doane shot 41.2-percent from the floor, hitting 7-of-24 3-point attempts, and 14-of-22 free throw attempts.
Sheldon pulled in a team-high nine rebounds while Oberhauser led the way with four assists and the duo of Ben Renshaw and Cooper Peterson had two steals apiece.
Manhattan Christian was led by Ferdinand Handy with 19 points and five steals. Taymont Lindsey added 12 points while Jordan White finished with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Next up for the Tigers will be a trip to Seward to take on nationally-ranked Concordia on Thursday, December 15, at 7:45 PM.
