Waido Scores Twice Against Mount Marty

Crete, Neb. - Doane football saw an early spark but the momentum turned as Mount Marty used a big second half to pull away for a 31–14 GPAC win Saturday evening at Memorial Stadium/Papik Field.

Both teams traded early scores in the opening quarter. Mount Marty struck first on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Rugby Ryken to Rodney Broadnax at the 11:09 mark, but Doane answered immediately. Quarterback Sam Hartman capped an 11-play, 66-yard drive with a 32-yard strike to Andrew Waido, tying the game at 7–7.

After Mount Marty regained the lead early in the second on a 4-yard pass to James Brinsley, Doane again responded. Hartman and Waido connected for their second touchdown of the half — a 20-yard scoring play with 7:55 left before halftime — sending the Tigers to the locker room ahead 14–13. Waido finished with five receptions for 90 yards and both Doane touchdowns.

Momentum shifted early in the third quarter when Daniel Pierce returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown to put the Lancers ahead 21–14. Mount Marty capitalized on a Doane fumble later in the period, turning the takeaway into a 12-yard touchdown run by Malachy Harts. A late 24-yard field goal from Camden Vance in the fourth sealed the 31–14 final.

Doane managed 229 yards of total offense, with Blake Allen pacing the ground game at 71 yards on 18 carries. Defensively, Reece Zutavern anchored the Tigers with a game-high 15 tackles and one sack, while Tanner Simdorn, Zac Sundquist, and Aidan Burns each added nine stops. JaKarion Jackson recorded an interception, returning it 13 yards.

Mount Marty outgained Doane 312–229 in total offense and held a nearly 16-minute advantage in time of possession. Ryken finished 20-of-27 for 170 yards and two touchdowns, while Harts rushed for 67 yards and a score. The Lancers improved to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in GPAC play; Doane moved to 1-5 on the year.

Doane will travel in two weeks to face Briar Cliff in Sioux City, looking to rebound in GPAC action.
