Late Touchdown Lifts BCU Over Football
Football went on the road on Saturday to Sioux City, Iowa, to take on Briar Cliff. In a low-scoring battle, the Chargers came up with a big play in the fourth quarter to post an 18-16 win over the Tigers.
Briar Cliff scored on their opening drive and converted a two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead. Doane's first points came off the foot of Kelen Meyer who hit a school-record 56-yard field goal in the early stages of the second quarter.
The Tiger defense had a big second quarter, forcing four consecutive turnovers by the Chargers. Owen Kuntz had an interception, followed by Reece Zutavern forcing a fumble and recovering the ball. Zach Fox added back-to-back interceptions, all in Charger territory.
Doane's lone touchdown of the game came following Zutavern's fumble recovery as Cruz Kirwan scored on a 21-yard run. Meyer converted a 21-yard field goal following Fox' first interception of the game. Doane led 13-8 at halftime.
In the second half, the Chargers had the only points of the third quarter with a field goal. Doane answered in the fourth quarter with a 40-yard field goal from Meyer. Following the kickoff and a BCU penalty, the Chargers were pinned at their nine-yard line. On the first play, BCU's Brock Saya threw a slant pass to Cory Carignan and he was able to out-run the Doane defense for a 91-yard score.
Cruz Kirwan finished the game for Doane going 13-of-32 for 133 yards. He led the team with 39 yards rushing. Zack Perez was the team's leading receiver with 75 yards on five receptions.
Cooper Hancock led the defense with 10 total tackles. Jarett Boggs was in on nine tackles and Carson Lavaley had eight, including 1.5 tackles for loss. The defense recorded nine tackles for loss in the game.
After a week off, the Tigers will return to action at Midland on October 21 in Fremont. Kickoff is set for 1 PM.
