Rain Leads to Low-Scoring Football Contest
Football battled in soggy North Dakota as they took on Jamestown. The Jimmies were able to pick up a 10-7 win over the Tigers.
Jamestown scored the first points of the game late in the first quarter. Setting up their first score was a short pass that turned into a 62-yard game. Ty Monson then connected with Gage Solano for a 16-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead.
The Doane offense would advance into Jimmie territory on five occasions in the first half but were unable to come away with a score.
Early in the third quarter, the Tigers intercepted their first pass of the season as Brenden Knapp came away with the pick. After moving down to the Jamestown-21, a penalty would derail the momentum and Doane was unable to come away with points.
The defense continued to hold Jamestown in check and early in the fourth quarter, the Tiger offense had worked their way to the Jimmie-30 yard line. On 4th-and-1, Doane decided to go for the first down and instead came away with seven points. Reece Zutavern took a handoff and bounced out to his right and raced 30 yards for the tying score.
The teams would battle for field position over the next 10 minutes and the Tigers getting pinned deep would prove costly. A low snap on a punt attempt resulted in a turnover on downs at the Jamestown-10 yard line. The defense recorded two tackles for loss and limited the Jimmies to three points on a 24-yard field goal.
Rook Williams made his first start at quarterback and finished 8-of-14 for 31 yards in the rain. Karsen Reimers was his top target, finishing with six receptions for 31 yards. Frazzie Wynn finished with 35 rushing yards while Rian Green added 31 yards and Zutavern posted 30. The Tigers posted 119 rushing yards but six sacks would leave them a net of 68 yards.
Carson Lavaley led the team with nine total tackles including four solo. Doane recorded 12 tackles behind the line of scrimmage, led by Owen Kuntz and Jarett Boggs with three apiece. Lavaley and Tanner Simdorn had two apiece. The defense held Jamestown to 222 yards of total offense.
Doane will return home to take on No. 3 Morningside on Saturday, September 30, for the Homecoming game. Kickoff is set for 1 PM with an extended halftime with a variety of festivities to take place including the introduction of the 1993 and 1997 Doane football teams that will be inducted into the Doane Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday evening.
