Baseball Rallies in 7th Inning to Sweep Morningside

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Doane Baseball erased a five-run deficit with a six-run seventh inning and added three more runs in the eighth to defeat Morningside, 12-9, in game two on Saturday.

The Tigers trailed 8-3 after six innings before breaking through in the seventh. Max Harris opened the inning with a single and later scored on a Caden Driessen single and error. Carter Roth followed with a two-run home run to center field, cutting the deficit to 8-6. Grant Sommers doubled and scored on a Brayden Jones single before Jett Grossart delivered the biggest swing of the inning, a two-run home run to right field that gave Doane a 9-8 lead.

Doane added insurance in the eighth. Sommers and Sam Kwapnioski drew walks before Johnny Vulcano doubled down the right-field line to score Sommers. Jordan Bond followed with a two-run single to right, pushing the lead to 12-8.

Roth finished 2-for-6 with a home run and three RBIs. Grossart went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Sommers was 2-for-4 with a double, two walks, two stolen bases and two runs. Harris added two hits and scored twice, while Bond drove in two runs.

Ethen Roberts earned the save in relief for Doane, throwing the final three innings. He allowed one run on four hits with three strikeouts. Carter Baete also gave the Tigers a key relief outing to earn the win, allowing two runs over three innings with three strikeouts.
