Baseball Drops Final Game of Series with Waldorf

CRETE, Neb. — Waldorf rallied late and held on in the nightcap, defeating Doane 4-3 in game two of a GPAC baseball doubleheader on Saturday at Doane Ballfield Complex.

Doane took the opener of the twinbill 2-0, but Waldorf answered in the second game by erasing a 1-0 deficit with two runs in the seventh before adding runs in the eighth and ninth innings.

The Tigers struck first in the fifth. Jett Grossart drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Thaden Wewel and came home when Carter Roth singled and advanced to third on a Waldorf fielding error in right.

Doane added two more runs in the seventh to regain the lead at 3-2. Grossart was hit by a pitch to open the inning and Wewel followed with a walk. After Kai Burkey laid down a sacrifice bunt, Roth brought home Grossart with a sacrifice fly to right. Grant Sommers then doubled down the right field line to score Wewel and give the Tigers their final run.

Roth led Doane offensively, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Sommers also had two hits and an RBI, while Grossart scored twice. The Tigers finished with six hits.

Waldorf's big swing came in the top of the seventh. After consecutive singles by Mason Smith and Cameren Rindone and a sacrifice bunt, Jack Kamalski delivered a two-run triple to right to put the Warriors in front 2-1. Waldorf added an unearned run in the eighth on a fielder's choice and got a solo home run from Kamalski in the ninth.

Kamalski paced Waldorf by going 2-for-4 with a triple, a home run and three RBI.

Riley Plummer turned in a strong start for Doane, allowing two runs on five hits over seven innings while striking out five and walking none. The defense turned two double plays behind Plummer. Ethan Merk took the loss in relief after working the final two innings.

Ben Dornseif started for Waldorf and gave up one run on five hits over five innings. Adrian Nevarez allowed two runs in two innings of relief, and Jackson Heath earned the win after closing out the final two frames.

Doane moved to 16-5 overall and 3-1 in GPAC play, while Waldorf improved to 8-16 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
