Baseball Picks Up Day One Sweep to Open GPAC Play

CRETE, Neb. — Doane used a nine-run fourth inning to break open a tight game and defeated Waldorf 14-4 on Friday afternoon in the second game of a GPAC doubleheader at the Doane Ballfield Complex.

The Tigers opened conference play with a sweep and improved to 15-4 overall and 2-0 in the GPAC, while Waldorf dropped to 7-15 overall and 0-2 in league play.

Doane took an early lead in the bottom of the second inning. Thaden Wewel singled with two outs and stole second before Brayden Jones delivered an RBI single to left-center to make it 1-0.

Waldorf tied the game in the third inning on an RBI single by Mason Smith, but the Tigers answered in a big way in the bottom of the fourth.

Doane sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning and scored nine runs on eight hits. Sam Kwapnioski drew a walk to start the rally and Wewel followed with a double. Jones delivered again with a two-run single before Grant Sommers launched a three-run home run to left field to push the lead to 6-1.

The Tigers continued the inning with additional extra-base hits and timely singles. Tanner Nelson doubled and later scored, Jordan Bond and Jett Grossart each drove in runs, and Wewel capped the inning with an RBI triple as Doane stretched the lead to 10-1. The Tigers hit for the cycle in the inning with Wewel accounting for the first double and a triple.

Doane added two more runs in the fifth inning when Jones singled home both Wewel and Kwapnioski.

The Tigers finished the game with 14 runs on 18 hits.

Wewel led the offensive attack with a 4-for-5 performance, scoring three runs while adding a double, triple and RBI. Sommers went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs, while Jones drove in three runs. Carter Roth also homered for the Tigers and finished with two hits.

On the mound, Nicolas Yard earned the win to improve to 4-0 on the season. The right-hander worked six innings, allowing three hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out five. Kaizer Papenhagen pitched the final inning in relief.

Doane and Waldorf will continue the four-game GPAC series on Saturday in Crete with another doubleheader at the Doane Ballfield Complex.
