Baseball Win Puts Oltmans Atop All-Time Coaches Wins List

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. — The Doane baseball team powered its way to a dominant 12-0 victory over Baker in game two on Saturday afternoon, highlighted by a historic milestone for the Tiger program as head coach Josh Oltmans became the winningest coach in Doane baseball history with his 273rd career victory.

The Tigers (12-3) backed the milestone with an explosive offensive performance, launching four home runs and receiving strong pitching in a seven-inning shutout of the Wildcats.

Doane wasted little time setting the tone. After an opening flyout, Grant Sommers blasted a solo home run in the first inning to put the Tigers on the board. Later in the frame, Johnny Vulcano added an RBI single to give Doane a 2-0 lead.

The Tigers extended the advantage in the second inning when Jett Grossart doubled to lead off the frame and later scored on Sommers' RBI single, pushing the lead to 3-0.

Doane's offense erupted again in the fourth inning. Thaden Wewel walked and stole second before Carter Roth launched a two-run homer to center field. The Tigers added another run in the inning when Sommers singled, stole third, and scored on a fielder's choice by Tanner Nelson, stretching the lead to 6-0.

The Tigers added three more runs in the sixth inning after loading the bases. Nelson delivered a two-run single through the right side and Sam Kwapnioski drove in another run with an RBI groundout to make it 9-0.

Doane put the game out of reach in the seventh. Roth delivered his second home run of the day, while Sommers and Wewel also went deep during the contest as the Tigers finished with four home runs and 13 hits.

Roth led the offensive attack, finishing 2-for-5 with two home runs, three RBIs, and three runs scored. Sommers was nearly perfect at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs, and three runs scored, while Nelson added two hits and three RBIs. Wewel also homered and scored twice.

On the mound, Nicolas Yard earned the win to improve to 3-0 on the season. The right-hander threw five shutout innings, allowing five hits while striking out five. Doane's bullpen preserved the shutout with Carson Sherrill and Kaizer Papenhagen combining for two scoreless innings.

The victory marked a historic moment for the Tigers as Oltmans' 273rd win moved him past the previous program record held by Jeremy Jorgensen, cementing his place as the winningest coach in Doane baseball history.

Doane will look to continue its momentum as the Tigers wrap up their weekend with a doubleheader at Benedictine on Sunday.
