Baseball Caps Texas Weekend with Second Top 20 Victory

VICTORIA, Texas — Doane wasted no time against 20th-ranked Texas A&M University-Victoria on Saturday, riding a pair of home runs and a decisive four-run fifth inning to an 8-3 victory at Riverside Stadium.

The Tigers (2-2) scored in each of the first three innings to build early separation. Carter Roth led off the game with a solo homer, then Doane added two more in the second on an RBI-double by Thaden Wewel and an RBI-single from Roth. In the third, Jordan Bond launched a solo shot to push the lead to 4-0.

Doane broke it open in the fifth. The Tigers loaded the bases with three straight singles, then cashed in when Tanner Nelson lined a two-run single that was extended into extra bases on a left-field error. Roth followed with another RBI hit, and a wild pitch brought home an additional run as Doane stretched the margin to 8-0.

On the mound, Nicolas Yard set the tone with 5.0 innings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out three. Doane's bullpen navigated traffic late, with A&M-Victoria (6-5) scoring one in the fifth and sixth on sacrifice flies before adding a run in the seventh.

Roth finished 3-for-5 with three RBI, a home run, and a stolen base, while Bond went 3-for-3 with a walk and his homer. Johnny Vulcano added two hits, and Nelson drove in two. Doane totaled 12 hits, stole two bases, and played error-free defense.
