Doane Football went on the road Saturday to Sioux City, Iowa, and downed Briar Cliff University, 39-10. The Tigers improved to 4-1 on the year and 2-1 in GPAC play.


Key Players

  • Drew Klein (SR/Papillion, Neb.) had three touchdowns on three receptions covering 53 yards.
  • Kyle Jensen (JR/Exeter, Neb.) ran for 147 yards on 14 carries (10.5/carry) and one touchdown.
  • Garrett Fries (SO/Indianola, Neb.) led the defense with eight tackles, including three behind the line of scrimmage.
  • Hank Glaros (BCU) had seven tackles and 1.5 sacks for the Chargers.

First Quarter Highlights

  • Doane took advantage of a 13-yard punt by Briar Cliff to set up their first score. Two plays and 31 seconds was what the Tigers needed as Jack Shadley (SR/Columbus, Neb.) hit Jacob Cornelius (SR/Grand Island, Neb.) for a 21-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was missed.
  • Doane's next possession was more of a grind it out type of possession as they used nine plays to march 71 yards. The Tigers threw the ball five times and used four rushes by Jensen. Shadley hit Klein for an 11-yard touchdown and a 13-0 lead.
  • Briar Cliff was able to get on the board on their next possession as they went 66 yards on 11 plays, going 3-for-3 on 3rd down. Chance Barlow scored on a three-yard run.

Second Quarter Highlights

  • Doane's first possession of the quarter ended in another nine-play drive. The Tigers covered 81 yards as Shadley and Klein hooked up for a second time in the 1st half, this time for a 13-yard touchdown. Doane converted two 3rd down plays on the drive.
  • Tariq Mustafaa (SR/Cedar Hill, Texas) forced a fumble on the next Chargers possession and River Simmons (SO/Mission Viejo, Calif.) came up with the recovery. Doane was unable to advance the ball but a 35-yard punt by Shadley pinned BCU at the two-yard line.
  • The Doane defense held BCU to a 3-and-out and following the punt, the Tigers took over in BCU territory at the 47-yard line.
  • Jensen posted runs of 27 and 20 yards on back-to-back plays as he found the end zone for a 26-7 lead after the missed extra point.
  • Both teams added field goals on their final possessions of the half. Austin Holloway capped a 14-play drive with a 38-yard field goal for BCU. Andres Burgoin (SR/San Diego, Calif.) capped Doane's nine-play drive as time expired in the quarter with a 35-yard field goal.

Third Quarter Highlights

  • Briar Cliff started with the ball in the 2nd half but started deep in their own end of the field following a penalty on the kickoff. The Chargers were able to take the ball out to the 37-yard line and risked field possession on a 4th down play. Bret Andrew (SR/Casper,Wyo.) came up with a stop on a quarterback keeper and forced a turnover on downs for the Tigers.
  • Doane took over but an interception would end the Tiger drive.
  • The only score of the quarter came on the next Doane possession. The Tigers needed eight plays to cover 84 yards. There were five combined penalties on the drive.
  • Shadley and Klein connected for the third time in the game for a touchdown and 36-10 lead. Their final pass and catch covered 29 yards.

Fourth Quarter Highlights

  • BCU ran out the clock in the 3rd quarter and set-up for a 36-yard field goal attempt to open the 4th. The kick was wide left.
  • Doane's first possession of the quarter resulted in a 35-yard field goal by Bryce Cooney (SO/Omaha, Neb.). The Tigers covered 62 yards on 10 plays to set up the score.

By the Numbers

  • Doane put up 571 yards in total offense, including 349 yards on the ground.  The Tigers averaged 8.5 yards per rushing attempt and 7.0 yards per play.
  • The defense held Briar Cliff to 295 yards in total offense, limiting the Chargers to 3.4 yards per play.
  • Garrett Sonderup (JR/Genoa, Neb.) and Jackson Love (JR/Norfolk, Neb.) added 73 and 63 yards, respectively, on the ground behind Jensen.
  • Shadley completed 14 passes for 184 yards and four touchdowns.
  • Cornelius led the team with four receptions and 69 yards receiving.
  • Riley Larson (JR/Hampton, Neb.) led the Tigers with six solo tackles in the game.
  • Cole Wiseman (SR/Sutton, Neb.) had an interception on the first play of the second quarter, giving him an NAIA-leading six.
  • The defense recorded five sacks and 12 tackles for loss in the game.

Next Kickoff

  • Doane returns home to begin the October slate as they host Dordt College on October 7 at 1 PM. The game will mark the centerpiece of Homecoming weekend.
