The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced the recipients of the 2016-17 NAIA Scholar Team award on Tuesday afternoon. Doane placed a record 18 of their eligible 21 teams on the list for the past academic year. To be honored, a varsity team must have a 3.0 (out of a 4.0) grade point average during the academic year.

In the 11th year of the NAIA Scholar Team program, four Doane teams continue to appear on the list each year. Receiving the honor each of the 11 years are the Tiger Volleyball, Women's Basketball, Women's Track & Field, and Women's Cross Country teams.

Cheer and Dance were recognized for the second straight season after the sport became recognized in 2015-16 for the honor. The Baseball team extended their current streak to seven consecutive years, longest amongst the men's teams. The Football team has not only taken strides on the field as a NAIA Top 10 program but also make the list for the first time.

Though not eligible through the NAIA Scholar Team award, the Shooting Sports team also posted a high grade point average (GPA). The National Championship squad on the range posted a 3.28 team GPA.
