Women's Outdoor Track & Field - Tue, Jun. 20, 2017

Doane Women's Track and Field not only had another successful year in competition but also executed in the classroom. On Tuesday, three members of the women's track and field team were recognized by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as Academic All-Americans in the College Division of Cross Country/Track and Field for their accomplishments.

Marissa DeWispelare (SR/David City, Neb.) received First Team honors for the second straight season after a dominating performance in cross country as well as on the track.

Joining DeWispelare on the First Team were Kalyn Brannagan (SR/Shelton, Neb.) and Kylie Gokie (SR/Lincoln, Neb.). Both Tigers are first time recipients of the award. This year marks the first time Doane has placed three women on the Academic All-American team, let alone all on the First Team. All three capped their seasons with NAIA All-American honors at the outdoor championships.

DeWispelare won the 3,000m steeplechase for the second consecutive year as she posted a school-record time of 10:23.99. This capped off a season in which she earned All-American honors in three separate seasons for the second time in as many years.

She placed 15th at the NAIA Cross Country National Championships in November, followed up with a 4th place finish in the 3,000m run at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships and her national title run during the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Brannagan was a national qualifier during the indoor season in the 600m run, where she finished 16th with a time of 1:37.48. It marked the first year she had even run in the event.

During the outdoor season, Brannagan saved her best for last as she ran a person best time in the 400m hurdles in the finals at nationals. She posted a time of 1:00.86 and placed 3rd overall. Brannagan has one outdoor season of competition remaining.

Gokie battled through injury and posted All-American honors in the javelin at the outdoor meet. She placed 7th at the NAIA meet with a throw of 136-08. She did not have an opportunity to compete in the heptathlon where she was a runner-up last year.

During the indoor season, Gokie took 6th place in the pentathlon. She posted 3,223 points at the national meet after winning the conference meet in February.
