Doane Softball closed out their California swing with a split of their doubleheader against No. 25 San Diego Christian on Thursday. The Tigers rallied to take the opener, 8-7, but dropped the night-cap, 8-0. Doane is now 13-11 on the season with the Hawks going to 11-10.


Game One Highlights

  • San Diego Christian built a 6-0 lead through five innings before the power was turned on in the Tiger dugout.
  • Sam Valadez (SR/Covina, Calif.) drove in the first run of the 6th with a RBI-double. She came around to score on a two-run home run by Haileigh Arthur (SO/Sacramento, Calif. ).
  • In the 7th, Doane plated five runs to take the lead. Jordyn Stearns (FR/York, Neb.) opened the inning with a double and Victoria Fernandez (FR/San Diego, Calif.) entered to pinch run. With one out, Nicole Fernandez (JR/San Diego, Calif.) doubled to plate her sister. Kelsey Bernhardt (SR/Thornton, Colo.) delivered a RBI-single to pull the Tigers within a run, 6-5.
  • With two outs and down to her final strike, Brittney Amezquita (JR/West Covina, Calif.) hit her first home run of the season, a two-run blast to put Doane in front 7-6.
  • Valadez followed with a double and scored on a single by Arthur for an 8-6 lead.
  • SDC scored an unearned run in the bottom of the 7th but left the tying run on first base.
  • Arthur closed out the game to record her second save of the season. Carly Shniderson (SO/Overland Park, Kan.) picked up the win, going six innings and allowing four earned runs on nine hits.
  • Valadez had three hits in the game for the Tigers as the team finished with 13. Arthur drove in three runs and Bernhardt scored twice.

Game Two Highlights

  • Doane was held to five hits as SDC won in five innings.
  • San Diego Christian scored three runs in the 1st inning and five runs in the 4th inning.
  • Hannah Feagler (SO/Torrington, Wyo.) took the loss, allowing three runs in 1.1 innings. Breanna Hamilton (FR/Windsor, Colo.) allowed three runs in two innings and Arthur allowed two unearned runs in 0.2 innings.
  • Five different players had hits for the Tigers.

  • Doane will return to Nebraska to take on York on March 19 in a doubleheader.
