Doane took on Kansas Wesleyan on Saturday morning in Crete in women's basketball action for the Doane Classic. Kansas Wesleyan was receiving votes to open the season but it was the Tigers finishing on top with a 92-76 win over the Coyotes. Doane improved to 2-0 on the season.
The Tigers jumped out early and held a pair of six point leads through the first seven minutes of play. Six different Tigers scored on the team's first 16 points of the game. Leading 16-10, Doane went into a small defensive slump as KWU went on a 19-7 run to take a 29-23 lead over the Tigers with seven minutes left in the half.
Doane battled back behind freshman Hanah Barnard. Trailing by three with three minutes left in the half, Barnard knocked down a three-point basket to tie the game and gave the Tigers the lead on a pair of free throws. Doane wouldn't trail again as Barnard connected on two more three-point baskets before the half ended and the Tigers led 45-41 at the break.
Doane opened up their lead to nine points midway through the second half before going on a 15-2 run that put the Tigers up 72-50. Doane's largest lead was 23 points late in the second half as Doane led 89-66 following two free throws from Heather Broman. Doane ended the game with 11 players scoring.
Hannah Dostal led all scorers as she finished with 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting for Doane. She led the team with five assists as well. Barnard posted 19 points, hitting five three-point baskets. Morgan Hill contributed 10 points off the bench.
Finishing shy of a double-double was Shelbi Bittinger, posting nine points and nine rebounds. She led the Tigers with two steals. Doane out-rebounded Kansas Wesleyan, 51-38. The Tigers shot 47-percent from the floor and held KWU to 37-percent.
The Coyotes were led by Alecia Smith's 21 points with Christian Cassity and Shelby Heim adding 15 points apiece. Heim led the team with six rebounds.
Doane will return to action on November 8 at the Cattle Classic in Seward. The Tigers will take on Valley City State University in their opening game.
