Outdoor Track & Field - Mon, Jun. 24, 2013

Doane College Track and Field athletes were recognized on Monday afternoon for their accomplishments in the classroom as the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America teams were announced.  Doane placed three senior student-athletes on the First Team and one sophomore on the Second Team for men's and women's track and field/cross country in the College Division.

On the men's side, Vince Krejci and Brad Higgins were named First Team Academic All-Americans.  Both men were named to the Second Team a year ago and closed out their careers at the NAIA National Championships in May.

Krejci, a Crete native, earned All-American honors during the outdoor track and field season with a sixth place finish at the NAIA meet in the discus.  He posted his career-best mark in the discus at the Doane vs. Nebraska Wesleyan dual when he hit a throw of 174-02.

Higgins, a Norfolk native, had a season-best mark in the decathlon at the NAIA meet but missed out on All-American honors by one spot as he finished ninth.  He was an all-conference performer for the Tigers in the decathlon and joined Krejci in helping the Tigers to a sweep of the conference crowns.

The seniors on this year's men's track and field team never lost a conference championship meet.

Jillian Ourada, an Omaha native, earned First Team Academic All-American honors for the Tiger women.  Ourada returned this year after suffering a season ending injuring in January 2012.  She was an All-American during the indoor and outdoor seasons in the pentathlon and heptathlon, respectively.  She took runner-up honors in the pentathlon.  Ourada was named the 2013 Doane Female Athlete-of-the-Year.

Erin DeVries, a sophomore from Chambers, was named Second Team Academic All-American.  She joined Ourada in earning All-American honors as she placed fourth in the pentathlon and took third in the heptathlon.  DeVries was named the GPAC Female Performer-of-the-Meet at the GPAC Outdoor Championships as she set the conference record in the heptathlon.

For the 2012-13 academic year, Doane student-athletes claimed 11 Capital One Academic All-American honors.  Tiger student-athletes have totaled 30 Academic All-American honors in the past two years.
